desks & secretaries
Circa 1865. Extra fine, American Renaissance Revival Secretary In Walnut and Burl. This Victorian bookcase/desk combination is exceptional for both its quality and very fine original condition. Tall and elegantly proportioned, unusual for all the quality details usually found on larger case pieces of this Period. Original finish solid American black walnut with applied burled walnut panels and carved solid walnut decorative elements. The desk features a fitted interior and two bird's eye maple drawers. The desk flap when it is opened does not slant down as is the usual case with these Period desks, it remains horizontal which makes the use of computer or lap top much easier than on the slanted surfaces. The desk flap retains its original green baize which is in somewhat tattered condition and can be easily replaced with felt or leather if desired. The base cabinet has four long drawers, one shallow that overhangs the other three larger drawers. All of the glass, hardware and locks are also original and in good working condition. There are two original walnut shelves that are adjustable. The secretary comes apart for easy moving into two large and one small (upper crown) pieces. Beautiful original patina which we have very lightly cleaned and waxed to retain the original finish. 34 1/2" wide x 90" tall x 18 1/2" deep. Price $3,400.
